The City of London, otherwise known as The Square Mile is the historic and major financial centre of London.  It contains the central business district which is home to many multinational corporations and is the global hub of many financial services institutions.  The City has a resident population of just 7,000 but over 300,000 people converge on the City daily to work there, mainly in the financial services sector.  The legal profession also forms a major component of the City.  Many landmark skyscrapers are located in the City - namely, the Natwest Tower, the "Gherkin" (30 St Mary Axe), the "Cheesegrater" (Leadenhall Building), the "walkie-talkie" (20 Fenchurch Street), the Broadgate Tower and the Heron Tower.  The main residential area of the City today is the Barbican Estate.
